Predicting the potential distribution of a previously undetected cryptic invasive synanthropic Asian house rat (<i>Rattus tanezumi</i>) in South Africa

Abstract Three species of Rattus, Norway rat (R. norvergicus), black rattus) and Asian house tanezumi) are currently known to occur in South Africa. The latter two cryptic form part the Rattus rattus complex. Historically, R. norvegicus has been reported along coast urban centres, is widespread most areas, except drier while tanezumi was only recorded country (and Africa) ca. 15 years ago, its distribution remains unknown. aim this study predict potential Africa assess how it overlaps with that using modelling. predicted mainly inland areas coast. as expected, contrast, range not restricted but also included areas. All three showed broad distributional ranges overlapped extensively indicating their establishment spread may be influenced by similar factors such proximity a wet moderate climate.
